Paris Fashion Week Flashback: Victor Alfaro’s Street Style Video

victor_alfaro_spring_summer

New York-based designer Victor Alfaro thinks a bit differently about fashion. He doesn’t like to produce collections just because the fashion calendar demands one, and he doesn’t believe traditional runway shows are as useful and productive as they once were.

So when he put together soft, organic patterns and relaxed, unbound shapes in his current, ready-to-shop selection, he wasn’t necessarily thinking about them as “spring/summer 2017,” but as pieces you would need and want at this time of year, in your kind of world.

And when it came time to show these clothes to the world—well, he definitely went outside the box. Instead of hosting any sort of show or presentation and inviting the press, he and his team produced an undercover film during key moments of last season’s Paris Fashion Week.

“I really had been thinking,” Victor told me. “What if I just bring my girls? What if I brought my models to three top shows in Paris and let them walk through the crowds?”

He knew the light would be magical—it always is in Paris. And he knew that his goal with the collection—to address the occasions of a woman’s life, but to create a new way of casual dressing, too—would fit seamlessly with the Parisian lifestyle.

“What if she needs a long dress?,” he had asked himself, and then given himself the additional challenge of making the dress super adaptable. “How would it need to be so that she could just add a tee to it later?”

And on and on throughout the collection’s elements.

And in the streets. His models walked confidently and casually through Paris while the brand’s camera crew simply let the action unfold.

And there was action. The hoards of street style photographers were duped; they had no idea Victor’s team had planted the girls and that they were filming a video.

“One of the girls was sort of freaked out, actually. One of the photographers was chasing her down the street trying to get his shot. Then, the next morning, there they were—on all the top blogs.”

What he said next indicates where his heart is. “There was a connection. The clothes really made a connection.” Victor’s big takeaway wasn’t necessarily the “free publicity”—it was the proof that he had made a collection that resonated.

It made people stop and look—and it made at least one person break into a run.

Emma Roberts, Thandie Newton and Kate Hudson’s Oscar Night Beauty by Charlotte Tilbury

89th Annual Academy Awards - Arrivals

This awards season, Charlotte Tilbury is determined to turn up the star wattage of Hollywood’s leading ladies. Through her knowing use of her glow-inducing products, the celebrity makeup artist brings out the unique radiance of every actress. Truly, her looks are stunning.

Below she took us step by step through her process for achieving Emma Robert’s Old Hollywood glamor for the Academy Awards. Her artists also worked with Thandie Newton and Kate Hudson for the big night, and they shared their techniques for their red carpet beauty looks too.

1. Charlotte prepped Emma’s skin with her new Magical Facial Dry Sheet Mask (coming in March!). This next generation mask instantly hydrates, brightens, smooths wrinkles and evens skin tone.

2. Charlotte applied to Light Wonder Foundation for the perfect glow base and sculpted in killer cheekbones using the easiest contour palette in the world: Filmstar Bronze and Glow

3. She dripped the highlight shade on the tops of the cheekbones and enhanced Emma’s limbs with her Supermodel Body.

4. For a statement, modern matte lip, Charlotte applied her Lip Cheat Liner in Kiss ‘N’ Tell to exaggerate Emma’s natural lip line, and created the ultimate blue-red matte lip with her iconic Matte Revolution lipstick in Red Carpet Red.

5. Charlotte created Emma’s bombshell eye by first applying Eyes to Mesmerise in Bette all over the eyelid up to the socket for a dreamy, bronzy wash of light. She then popped Jean in the inner corners of the eye to make them instantly bigger and brighter.

6. Then she defined the eye with her Color Chameleon in Bronzed Garnet to create a soft, seductive feline flick.

7. Charlotte finished the look with Full Fat Lashes mascara just on the top lashes.

Makeup artist Jo Strettell gave the gorgeous Thandie Newton a fun teal eye and a nude lip to go with her funky sequin dress.

1. Jo used the new Instant Magic Facial Dry Sheet Mask (coming in March!) to give the skin instant glow.

2. Magic Cream was then smoothed on to plump out the skin, followed by Wonderglow primer and Magic Foundation for a flawless, poreless complexion.

3. Cheekbones were sculpted in with Charlotte’s Filmstar Bronze and Glow. A warm glow was conjured with a swish and pop of Cheek to Chic in The Climax.

4. Brows were lifted with Brow Lift. Eyes to Mesmerise in Cleopatra was washed all over the eyelid, and then taken under the eye along the lash line for a hypnotizing, gilded, majestic gaze.

5. Full Fat Lashes mascara was applied for a full Hollywood flutter!

6. Jo sculpted Thandie’s limbs with Supermodel Body that catches the light beautifully.

7. Thandie’s lips were lined with Charlotte Tilbury Iconic Nude Lip Cheat Pencil. Charlotte’s signature Matte Revolution lipstick in Very Victoria was then applied for a fuller wider, gorgeous nude lip.

Makeup artist Debra Ferullo gave all-American beauty Kate Hudson a fresh-faced glow for the Vanity Fair after party.

1. Debra used the new Instant Magic Facial Dry Sheet Mask (coming in March!) to give the skin instant glow.

2. Magic Cream was then smoothed on to plump out the skin, followed by Wonderglow primer to make the skin come to life. Next, Light Wonder in 3 was applied to Kate’s T-zone, and Light Wonder in 5 and 6 was applied to the hollows of cheeks.

3. The Retoucher was applied under the eyes to bring light to the area, and Airbrush Flawless Finish Powder in 2 was applied to perfect skin.

4. To groom Kate’s brows, Debra applied Brow Lift in Rita and Grace K to achieve a natural effect. For the eyes, Team Tilbury applied Eyes to Mesmerise in Marie Antoinette over the entire lid up to the brow bone. She then used Eyes to Mesmerise in Bette on just the lids up to the socket line.

5. Using the enhance shade from the Luxury Palette in The Glamour Muse, Debra applied it from the lid up to the socket line and blended outwards and upwards, and then went overtop with the pop shade.

6. With the smoke shade in the same palette, Debra applied the shadow to the outer corners and blended into the socket.

7. Debra finished by applying two coats of Charlotte’s Full Fat Lashes mascara to the bottom and top lashes.

8. Debra lined Kate’s lips with Lip Cheat Pencil in Iconic Nude and filled in with Matte Revolution lipstick in Very Victoria.

9. Lastly, Cheek to Chic in Ecstasy was applied to the apples of Kate’s cheeks to complete the look.

Building a Boys School and Attending a Maasai Wedding in Kenya | Travel Diary

traveldiary_kenya_feature_201702

Our series about wanderlust-worthy vacation hotspots, with local picks (and gorgeous pics) from our intrepid Nordstrom crew.

Travel Diary, Kenya

Who: Alison Burckhardt, Brand Manager, Nordstrom Product Group

Where:  Kenya

Alison Burckhardt, Kenya trip

Why did you choose this destination?

When I was planning my 6-week work sabbatical, I knew I wanted to incorporate doing something in which I gave back. I would be traveling with my husband and 16-year-old twins, so beyond just having an amazing experience seeing the sights, what could we do that would leave a lasting impression and give to others? We already had spent time with WE (WE.org), participating in WE days and camps and knew that they have WE villages where you can volunteer. So after browsing their website, we settled on Kenya.

Travel Diary, WE Organization in Kenya

What did you wear there?

Since we were working on building the first all-boys high school a good portion of the time, anything that we didn’t need to worry about getting filthy was our clothing choice! We needed a good sun hat that protected face and neck—it was full sun during the day.

Was there anything you wished you’d have packed but didn’t?

I think we all wished we had brought proper work boots! After many mishaps with cement, water, rocks and dirt, our sneakers were trashed.

Where did you stay?

We stayed at Camp Bogani, which is run by the WE organization, in a beautiful three-bedroom hut. There were also luxury tents that families stayed in.

Favorite meal/place to eat:

The food at Camp Bogani was amazing! Three meals a day, all organic fruits and vegetables that came from a massive farm. We tried goat for the first time!

Travel Diary, Kenya

Favorite nightlife venue:

Every evening they supplied entertainment for the families in the camp. What still gives me chills is the night the Kenyan Boys Choir came–voices of angels.

Favorite activity:

There are so many. How can I choose? I can’t! So here goes: Sunset Safari, watching the animal migration, beading with the mamas, morning hikes with the Maasai Mara warriors, going to the mamas’ home, doing the ‘water walk,’ carrying 50 pounds of water up from the river on our backs, visiting the primary schools and meeting the children.

Masai Wedding, Kenya

Favorite memory:

Participating in WE co-founder Craig Kielburger’s Maasai wedding.

What’s something cool that you learned?

My kids are amazing! My son quickly learned Swahili. We can make a difference. We can be the change!

Alison Burckhardt, Kenya

Did you meet any interesting locals?

We had several Maasai warriors as guides: Peter, Jackson and Wilson. Also our village guide and friend Tobi, and Mary, who ran the meal service.

Travel Diary, Kenya

If you were to move there, what do you think you’d do for a living?

I would live in a house on the beach in Kilifi!

What Men Wore to Milan Fashion Week

What men wear to women’s Fashion Weeks always interests and frequently inspires us. Sometimes it inspires us to write a little fanfic.

L: You know what we look like right now?

R: Yeah, Woodward and Bernstein 2.0

L: Lol. Was going to say Starsky & Hutch!

R: LOL. We’re never going to find Huggy Bear in this crowd.

*Thinks to self*: Wow I am so glad I made this trip. I haven’t had this much fun since I was dancing to Kurtis Blow at Studio 54.

The Shoe Trends Every Italian Girl Wore to Milan Fashion Week

Milan Fashion Week street style, shoes

Sophia Webster printed Butterfly Wing sanda;

After a long day of pinning and bookmarking runway looks, nothing takes the edge off like losing yourself in a bit of street-style surfing. And if you consider yourself a fashion-month superfan, you can probably identify a city by its unique slew of It girls and street-style moments. New York is effortlessly cool; London is forward and edgy; and Paris is perennially chic. But Milan—well, Milan has more fun. Glamorous and bold, with an “anything goes” attitude, Italian street style is like theater, and we can’t get enough. The outfits literally jump off the pavement with rich colors, unexpected patterns and dramatic flourishes. And when it comes to scene-stealing techniques, fashion girls in Italy understand the power of a great pair of shoes. Because it’s impossible to pick a single favorite style, today we’re rounding up four big shoe trends you’ll see fashion girls wearing all season long. Get ready to take your outfits to the next level with must-have pairs you can shop right now.

It’s safe to say that ballerina-inspired fashion is here to stay in 2017. The undoubtedly feminine trend has taken over IG feeds and shopping carts everywhere, and for spring, you can’t own too many pairs of soft, satiny ballet flats with dainty bows at the ankle.

Flats are giving heels some serious competition this season. While there’s no shortage of classic iterations out there, consider making your outfits a little more interesting by opting for fun, sought-after styles like menswear-inspired loafers, fringe sandals and slides in vibrant colors (both work- and weekend-appropriate, we think).

A striking silhouette is the sign of a well-constructed and fashion-forward shoe (think of the carefully measured lines of a structured coat). For spring, designers are applying stylish license to shoes that boast unique shapes and thoughtful tailoring in crossover flaps, invisible panels and curvy block heels.

What to Pack for Fashion Week with Nordstrom Global Trend Reporter Kristin Yamada

kristin3

Our Global Fashion Reporter Kristin Yamada is never without her camera, visually and mentally processing style. Her job is to travel to Fashion Week and other assignments, document fashion on the street, and report back to us what it all means.

She feeds perfect photos to The Thread for our galleries and slideshows. But what you don’t see are her physical trend reports, hefty tomes which she delivers and explains live to an internal audience. Where did this collar come from? What does the combination of this sneaker and this handbag indicate? Kristin has the answers. She’s a combination field biologist and fashion anthropologist.

Also she’s just cool. Here she is talking about packing for Fashion Week.

SHOP: Vetements teeAlexander Wang bootie | Herbivore body polish | Bose headphones | Christopher Kane cardigan | Creatures of Comfort bag

kristin1

What item of clothing can you not wait to bust out during Fashion Week?

A newly customized marl knit beanie. I’ll be rocking that baby on the regular. Fall / Winter rounds of fashion month are frigid so warm and woolly soft accessories are often where style meets survival in the street.

What will you do to recover? Do you have a secret FW weapon?

Creating moments of calm is key to restoring my health bar as I go. The perfect balance of silence and vibe-y jams helps me relax after long days and lengthy travel.

My secret playlist weapon for FW17?  Sampha – hands down. Check. Him. Out. I’ve ear-stalked this man for five years, from record label parties in Tulum to Art Basel. His first full-length album “Process” has finally dropped and it is something to get lost in.

Returning home, I go straight into the next phase of my fashion week work: a 200-page trend report. Editing down the thousands of images and writing copy takes about a week. Digitally producing the document requires another.

kristin4

This is the point where I make sure to schedule a couple massages. They help undo the toll of hours on planes and loosen muscles before jumping back into desk mode.

Finally, the moment comes to present and publish. It’s very rewarding. As is the day after that, when I recover by giving myself a pass to do nothing but sleep, drink tea and wear only clothing that is at least 3 sizes too big.

Shoes: comfort or style? What shoes will you be wearing?

Both, always. Thick-laced Prada hikers are still my go-to winter boots. I live in those things this time of year. Classic low top chucks and all white Airmax will also be in tow – they keep all bases covered. I haven’t quite landed on which heel will win a spot in the suitcase, mostly because I’m itching for a new pair… but trying hard to behave.

What’s the number one thing you won’t forget to squeeze in while at Fashion Week?

A stop by the Foundation Louis Vuitton in Paris.  The Frank Gehry wonder and its seasonal exhibitions are always well worth the bit of trek to get out there.

kristin3

Who’s the one person you know you’ll make time to see despite the insanity?

My brother from another, Adrien. He’s one of my favorite, creative earthly beings. So favorite, in fact, that my fiancé and I have roped him into marrying us soon! He will be in New York with fellow Aquarian gal pal Keri, so we’ve got a double birthday dinner in the works.

What’s your favorite all-time souvenir from Fashion Week?

I scored a fresh copy of the Vetements “Summercamp” book last season when it launched at the Comme des Garçons Trading Museum. After traveling 4,994 miles back to Seattle with me, it has become hardcore coffee table BFFs with my Frank Ocean “Boys Don’t’ Cry” zine.
