Fashion Looks Forward in the Manus x Machina MET Exhibit

For its spring exhibition, the Costume Institute at the Metropolitan Museum of Art examines handcrafted and mechanical manufacturing in fashion, with an exhibit gift shop curated by Nordstrom VP of Creative Projects Olivia Kim.

Fashion and technology are historically interwoven: Textile manufacturing was the major catalyst of the Industrial Revolution, introducing the ready-to-wear economy. Early computers borrowed from the punch card technology of the jacquard loom for their processors. Now, computer-aided design is a requisite fashion course for would-be designers.

The Metropolitan Museum’s Costume Institute presents an exploration of fashion manufacturing in Manus x Machina: Fashion in an Age of Technology (May 5-August 14). Haute couture and prêt-à-porter designs are on display in the more than 100 pieces in this exhibit.

“Traditionally, the distinction between the haute couture and prêt-à-porter was based on the handmade and the machine-made, but recently this distinction has become increasingly blurred as both disciplines have embraced the practices and techniques of the other,” said Andrew Bolton, the Costume Institute’s curator. “Manus x Machina will challenge the conventions of the hand/machine dichotomy, and propose a new paradigm germane to our age of digital technology.”

Ranging from late-19th-century gowns constructed pre-sewing machine to contemporary pieces derived from 3D-printing technologies, Manus x Machina examines our fashion traditions through historical and technological lenses.

On the museum’s main floor, examples of haute couture fashions are juxtaposed with machine-made versions. Couturiers specializing in embellishments such as embroidery, lacework and leatherwork occupy a series of rooms and will present workshops on a variety of techniques. Visitors can also view the 3D printing of garments in the Anna Wintour Costume Center galleries. Demonstrations of other innovative processes such as computer modeling, laser cutting and circular knitting will also take place.

Including designs by Karl Lagerfeld, Hussein Chalayan, Coco Chanel, Mary Katrantzou, Rei Kawakubo, Junya Watanabe, Cristóbal Balenciaga, Miuccia Prada, Iris van Herpen and many other illustrious fashion designers and houses, Manus x Machina strives to capture the progression of clothing creation, as both a technique and an art.

Pampering Yourself, the Perfect Breakfast in Bed and the Best Part of Being a Mom with Antica Farmacista’s Founders

dlp

Shelley Callaghan Antica Farmacista

Susanne Pruitt and Shelley Callaghan

Co-founders of the luxury (and just downright dreamy) home and body fragrance brand Antica Farmacista, Susanne Pruitt and Shelley Callaghan are moms, successful businesswomen and delightful human beings. They spent some time telling us all about their Mother’s Day traditions, the benefits of a good bottle of wine and what’s new that has them excited.

What are the three best things about being a mom?
Shelley: 1. The unconditional love! I am grateful every day for the ability to experience that emotional bond and love that I have with my sons.
2. As my sons grow, I realize that being a mother makes you a role model on a daily basis (whether you like it or not). As a result, it makes you want to be your best self and lead by example. A great privilege!
3. The pure joy of watching my sons navigate the different phases and stages of their lives, following their passions and becoming compassionate young men. The ultimate reward as a mom!

What does every mom need…and what does she secretly want?
Shelley: Needs: a sense of humor (and a bottle of wine) to get through the teenage years. Wants: hugs and kisses (eternally).

What is your favorite Mother’s Day memory of all time?
Shelley: When my sons presented me with a slice of a tree trunk they stumbled upon that was in the shape of a heart. They painted it red and used a power tool to carve out the word “mom.” It’s my favorite piece of art I own.

Do you have any Mother’s Day traditions?
Shelley: Unstructured time with my boys, cooking and eating our way through the day. However this year, Susanne and I will be in Honolulu at the Nordstrom Ala Moana Trend Show!

How do you pamper yourself on the day?
Susanne: My three keys to relaxation are Lancôme eye cream, our bergamot and ocean aria body butter and a spritz of Evian facial water spray for an invigorating lift.

Just between us, what would be the perfect gift this Mother’s Day?
Susanne: One of my favorite treats is a hand and foot massage in a massage chair, so this is what I send my adorable Southern mom!

And the perfect breakfast in bed made just for you would be…?
Susanne: Breakfast in bed! Sign me up. It would have to include French press coffee, raspberries and poached eggs with a baguette—delivered with the New York Times!

Cucumber-Collection

Not to forget your other baby—tell us about what’s new at Antica Farmacista that has you excited! We’d love to know more about the story behind your Cucumber and Lotus Collection.
Susanne: Our fragrance combo in our new cucumber and lotus flower collection was actually inspired by a scent that my best friend and business partner, Shelley, created in celebration of my birthday! She knew how much I loved the smell of fresh cucumber and spicy coriander…so she blended the two (with an array of other ingredients) to create a fragrance that will always remind me of our friendship. I keep a cucumber and lotus flower diffuser at my desk at all times, along with a body moisturizer to keep my skin feeling hydrated.

Breanne & Mike | Real Weddings

Untitled-1

Breanne shares her and Mike’s big day—an island wedding full of romantic elegance.

Our location and theme: St. John Vianney Chapel on Balboa Island, Newport Beach, California. Reception at Sherman Library and Gardens in Corona del Mar.

CeanOneFav22

Mike and I met and fell in love in Newport Beach, where we both live and work and envision starting a family, so we felt strongly about having our wedding there rather than in my hometown of Camarillo. We both had lots of friends flying in from New York City and Chicago for the wedding, and we wanted them to see and fall in love with where we live now.

Eshelman1003

Eshelman1081

Eshelman1094The theme was romantic elegance. I wanted our wedding to ooze tradition and romance. The colors were blush, gold and silver. Beautiful flowers and mercury glass adorned the tables; the water glasses were gold-rimmed and the silverware gold-plated.

One of my favorite things was our guestbook table. The guestbook was surrounded by wedding pictures of our grandparents and our parents, with a sign that read, “All because two people fell in love.” The guestbook was created by my mother using an online photobook program with all the pictures from our engagement shoot.

Eshelman0251

Special moments: One of my favorite moments was walking across the main street on Balboa Island to get from the bridal waiting area to the chapel. Traffic stopped as our entourage crossed the street, and all the passersby were cheering. It was so fun and made for a great photo!

Eshelman1260

Another favorite moment was filling up the dance floor with our closest friends and family when “The Wobble” played. I love dancing to that song, and it was so much fun for Mike and me to dance to it on a dance floor overflowing with our friends!

The bridesmaid dresses: I was extremely busy with work in the months leading up to the wedding, and Nordstrom.com was my go-to for all my wedding and accessory needs. My bridesmaids wore Monique Lhuillier Bridesmaids dresses in blush. This dress was beautiful and flattered everyone’s body type. Additionally, the free shipping and free returns made the logistics easier on everyone. One of my bridesmaids had a baby just three months before the wedding, and the ability to buy the dress in three sizes and determine closer to the wedding which she would keep was extremely helpful. The groomsmen’s ties were also purchased from Nordstrom. I ordered several online to find the best match.

Jimmy Choo glitter peep-toe sandals.

I wore the Jimmy Choo Clue slingback pump, in a Nordstrom-exclusive color. I absolutely love them and kept them on while dancing the night away!

Advice for other brides-to-be: I highly recommend taking dance lessons for your first dance. They provide a fun outlet from wedding planning and a time to spend learning something new with your fiancé. It also makes the first dance much more fun for your guests; no one wants to watch people sway back and forth for three minutes!

Also, enjoy the planning. The key is organization and teamwork. Don’t be afraid to delegate some responsibilities. It was a labor of love for Mike and me as well as our parents. We used this time to get to know our extended families.

Where was the honeymoon? We wanted a unique adventure and unspoiled beauty; we traveled to the islands of Gili Meno and Lombok in Indonesia.

The Weekend Guide: April 29-May 1

VIVA from Magnolia PicturesHéctor Medina in VIVA, a Magnolia Pictures release. Photo courtesy of Magnolia Pictures.

SEE: VIVA
Exploring the complicated codes of machismo and gay culture in a destitute but transitioning sector of Havana, VIVA is both a touching and harsh film. Jesus, a gay hairdresser, pursues his drag star dreams while hustling on the side. His father, Angel, returns from a stint in prison and forcefully sets himself up in Jesus’s home and life. As they struggle to reconcile, Mama, an aging queen, offers tough warmth and protection to both men.

Eva Hesse
German-American sculptor Eva Hesse died of a brain tumor at just 34. But her short life contained more hardship and success than most. Escaping the Holocaust, Hesse came to the U.S., where she studied at Yale. This documentary explores her artwork and journals to show an accomplished young artist celebrated by her Conceptual artist peers and committed to her craft as she confronted adversity and ultimately death.

READ: Golden Delicious by Christopher Boucher
Appleseed, Massachusetts, is the town that metafiction built. When the economy begins to rot, due to a blight of bookworms that burrow into the residents’ very meaning, the young narrator finds his own life and that of those he loves upended. Boucher’s strange story is referentially so. Prepare to meet Reader and question the very act of literature as you consume this book.

HEAR: Balter / Saunier by Ensemble Dal Niente/Deerhoof
With arrangements by Deerhoof drummer Greg Saunier and Brazilian composer Marcos Balter, this musical collaboration dabbles in jazz, pop and rock, resulting in something approaching experimental lounge music. The talent on this album should surprise no one familiar with the two groups, but the successful merging of both is more than an amalgamation of sounds, rather truly inventive harmonies.

The Ship by Brian Eno
Musical magician Brian Eno has worked with David Bowie, John Cale, David Byrne and Bryan Ferry, he’s produced countless other chart toppers and he’s had an enduring solo career. The Ship continues Eno’s exploration of signature soundscapes in four tracks (including a cover of the Velvet Underground’s “I’m Set Free”) that cumulatively form an electronic Titanic of emotion.

Cilantro Lime Vinaigrette
1/3 cup seasoned rice vinegar
1/4 cup fresh lime juice
2 tablespoons honey
1 clove garlic, minced

To make the Cilantro Lime Vinaigrette, combine the rice vinegar, lime juice, honey, garlic, chipotle and salt in a blender or food processor fitted with the metal blade. With the machine running, gradually add the canola oil. Add the cilantro and process until the vinaigrette is smooth.

Roasted Garlic Aioli
1 cup mayonnaise
Small garlic clove, minced
1 1/2 tablespoons Roasted Garlic Puree
1 tablespoons lemon juice, freshly squeezed
3/4 teaspoon kosher salt

easy-roasted-garlic-aioli

In a large mixing bowl, add mayonnaise, fresh garlic, roasted garlic puree, lemon juice and salt. Whisk the ingredients together until well combined. Cover and refrigerate until needed. The aioli can be refrigerated for up to 2 days.

Crispy Shrimp Tacos
16 corn tortillas
24 extra-large (16/20) count shrimp (preferably wild caught), peeled and de-veined
2 cups all-purpose flour
1 1/2 teaspoon kosher salt
3/4 teaspoons ground black pepper
1/4 teaspoon cayenne pepper
3 eggs
2 cups panko Japanese-style breadcrumbs
Canola oil for frying
2 cups Napa cabbage, finely shredded
1/2 red onion, thinly sliced
1 mango, diced 1/4 inch
Cilantro, for garnish
Lime wedges, for garnish

Fried crispy shrimp tacos recipe with cabbage, mango and cliantro lime dressing from Nordstrom. Photo by Jeff Powell.

To prepare the tortillas: Stack 2 tortillas together and mist water between pairs for 8 total stacks. One or two at a time, place each pair onto a lightly oiled griddle or pan over medium-high heat. Flip over when crispy and lightly browned. Remove and cover with a towel.

To prepare the shrimp: Heat at least two inches of oil in a heavy-bottom pot until it reaches 350°F. meanwhile, prepare three shallow dishes for dredging. In one, mix together the flour salt, pepper and cayenne. In another, add the eggs and beat until homogenous. In the third, add the panko breadcrumbs. Working in batches of about six at a time so as not to overcrowd when frying, place shrimp in flour mixture and toss to ensure complete coverage. Shake off excess flour and transfer shrimp to the dish with the beaten eggs, turning shrimp over to coat in egg wash. Last, transfer the shrimp to the panko breadcrumbs and toss to coat well.

Place shrimp into hot oil and fry until golden brown and crispy, about 2 minutes. Remove from hot oil with a spider or thongs and transfer cooked shrimp to a baking sheet fitted with a wire rack to drain excess oil. Repeat dredging and frying with remaining batches of shrimp.

To assemble the tacos: Place two grilled tortilla pairs on a plate. Top with three shrimp each, a drizzle of Roasted Garlic Aioli, cabbage, red onion, mango and a couple spoonfuls of Cilantro-Lime Vinaigrette. Garnish each with a sprig of cilantro and lime wedges on the side.

Makeup How-To: Get a Natural, Glowing Makeup Look from Day to Night with Charlotte Tilbury

dlp

how-to-get-a-natural-makeup-look-tutorial-from-day-to-night-with-charlotte-tilbury-1how-to-get-a-natural-makeup-look-tutorial-from-day-to-night-with-charlotte-tilbury-1

Here comes Charlotte Tilbury to the rescue! She’s created an understated, glowing look that highlights the natural beauty in every woman, and she’s sharing her expert secrets. To re-create this gorgeous and universally flattering look, here are her step-by-step instructions and products you’ll need—including her newest launch, the Instant Look in a Palette. Designed to take you from day to night, this gotta-have-it palette contains products you can dial back for the desk or amp up for dinner out.

For the day look:

  1. To create the natural, polished daytime look, start with Light Wonder foundation to get perfect coverage in a lightweight formula. Apply by blending it into your skin from the middle outward. (Secret Tip: For supermodel skin, mix a bit of your foundation with Wonderglow for a gorgeous, glowing complexion.)
  2. Use The Retoucher to make imperfections disappear and minimize pores, lines and wrinkles. Twist up the end and apply a small amount of concealer directly onto your imperfection. Pat concealer into the targeted area with your ring finger, using the lightest touch. Build up layers to your desired coverage.
  3. Next, use the new Instant Look in a Palette. A must-buy ahead of summer, the formulas are easy to blend and come in a format that’s easy to use. Apply Eye Brighten (#1) all over the lid using a blender brush. Used to prime, it has a matte texture and is emollient-rich to smooth the eyelid.
  4. Then apply Eye Enhance (#2) to the outer socket and run it underneath the eye with a smudger brush. This satin shade blends easily with all of the other colors.
  5. Line the upper lash line with The Classic eye powder pencil in Audrey.
  6. Finish with lashings of Full Fat Lashes mascara.
  7. Create a beautiful, sun-kissed highlight with Face Bronze (#4), blending it all over the face where the sun would naturally hit. The bronzer has been specially blended to sculpt any skin tone.
  8. Next, use the best-selling Lip Cheat in Pillowtalk, a rich, velvety lip liner that glides on effortlessly and has the power to re-shape, re-size and balance your lips. Outline starting with the corner of the top lip. For the perfect supermodel pout, cheat and balance the lip shape and size by drawing over the outer edge of your natural lip line.
  9. Complete by filling in your lips with the matching K.I.S.S.I.N.G lipstick in Bitch Perfect.

To take this look into the evening:

  1. Using the smudger brush, apply Eye Smoke (#3) along upper lash line and underneath. This matte shade is rich in pigment to create a dramatic effect.
  2. With Face Bronze (#4) and a Powder & Sculpt brush, suck in your cheeks and follow the hollow to create a more defined contour.
  3. For a dreamy glow, glide Face Highlight (#7) along the tops of the cheekbones. The highlighter is universally flattering and uses Light Flex Technology to create a luminous complexion.
  4. Apply Cheek Swish (#5) along the cheekbones and Cheek Pop (#6) onto the apples of your cheeks. Color-rich crushed pearls smooth and buff the skin for optimal and even application, while hydrating polymers nourish the skin and replace the talc content that causes a dusty, lackluster finish.
  5. Complete the perfect evening-out look with Matte Revolution lipstick in Bond Girl.

How to Serve Up Lemonade’s Style

Beyonce Lemonade

Like the majority of the thinking and feeling populace, we were floored by Beyoncé’s new album Lemonade, a beautiful visual and aural exploration of sorrow and forgiveness in intimate relationships and in American racial history. Her interweaving of a maybe-fictional, maybe-real marital infidelity with the tragedies that African Americans, both past and present, have suffered in our nation was mostly poignant, often furious and ultimately redemptive. When Beyoncé told ELLE magazine earlier this month that she wanted to create music to make people heal, this is certainly to what she was referring.

Beyonce Lemonade

Throughout the changing emotional and artistic terrain on Lemonade, Beyoncé uses her fashion choices to signify complex situations and reactions. From the swinging of a baseball bat in a cheerful Roberto Cavalli dress in “Hold Up” to her defensive Hood by Air fur coat in “Don’t Hurt Yourself” and the taunting apathy of her twin hair braids and deuces up in “Sorry” to the romantic Victorian dresses by Givenchy, ruffled shirt by Rosie Assoulin and the “Formation” Gucci red dress, Beyoncé’s fashion choices were evocative, careful and extraordinary.

To maintain that residual feeling that great art leaves in its wake, that raw spirit of human resurrection and connection captured in Beyoncé’s verses and that solidarity of sisters united, we’ve rounded up a few pieces that remind us of Lemonade. Wear them to carry you through the week or to see the diva in concert. These are uniforms that slay, like Bey.

Making jealous or crazy look good.

Who says angry has to be blah? Slip on this marigold N°21 Alisha sleeveless midi dress to skip through the streets with or without intent to cause property damage like Bey did in the “Hold Up” sequence.

Dress like Beyonce's Lemonade

Elevate yourself by pairing it with the Candy Saint Laurent platform sandal, like the Queen did. We’d also suggest you accessorize with hoop earrings to capture the full impact of your swagger.

You’ll never recreate her, though.

IVY PARK separates
Vera Wang Faux fur for the Beyonce Lemonade look

“Don’t Hurt Yourself” trying to recreate Bey’s looks. But this one is fairly easy.

Start with some of the diva’s own IVY PARK activewear, like this seamless strappy bra top and the V mid rise three-quarter leggings. You’re going to need to top that sports bra off with a fluffy fur.

We selected the Vera Wang Scarlett collarless faux fur in ash grey, though we’re pretty sure the goddess of pop wouldn’t suffer to wear anything less than chinchilla to tell her man off.

Put your hair into some micro braids and add a snarl.

Stop interrupting my grinding.

To get with your girls, on a party bus, in a field or wherever, a mesh bra with a leather patchwork jacket is casually cool. Superfine’s Star leather jacket has strong patterning like Beyoncé’s number in “Sorry.” Over the b.tempted B.Active sports bra you’ll be ready to tell your boy, bye.

Beyonce Lemonade, Jacket and Bra

Slip some heavy metal around your neck, like this Kendra Scott multistrand collar necklace. Then try your hand at copying the delicately captivating body art by Laolu Senbanjo that decorated Beyoncé and her dancers. This Obsessive Compulsive Cosmetics pencil should get you started.

Beyonce Lemonade, Accessories

Daddy made a soldier out of me.

Beyonce Lemonade, Simone Rocha floral print dress

In “Daddy Lessons,” Beyoncé sings about the legacy of paternity and its impact on daughters. To begin this surprising country song sequence, she stands with a blues guitarist in a tunnel while wearing a beautiful feminine dress of African textiles.

With its puff sleeves and and strong floral print, this dress by Irish designer Simone Rocha approaches the look. Simply place your hair in a soft updo and prepare to croon about your own daddy issues.

Make Lemonade.

If you don’t want to evoke a particular song but show your admiration for the entire album, throw on some lemons, maybe even a lemonade print. These bright and uplifting designs could make a bad situation more than bearable.

Sweet lavender socks with pitchers of the summery drink should bring a smile to your workaday routine. Upping the fruity glamour, Dolce&Gabbana introduced an elegant citrus print for Spring/Summer like the one on this beautiful silk sundress.
Beyonce Lemonade

Then take a look in the mirror and say, “Wassup.”
