Street Style: Calgary

Did you know that Nordstrom is heading to Canada? That’s right—our first-ever Canadian store will open its doors this September in the beautiful city of Calgary.

As we prep for the auspicious day, we’ve been spending a lot of time up north, meeting cool Calgarians like ultra-stylish photographers (and real-life couple) Ania Boniecka and Tyler Stalman.

We tapped the talented duo to share some street style with us and give you an idea of the local sartorial flavor.

“Jade is really adventurous with her wardrobe. She has a very distinct style and always completes her outfit with fun accessories. I love how she ties in her breezy blouse with those awesome bandage shoes—a souvenir, she says, from her trip to Brazil.”

“As a local style icon, Kim is really representing with this olive-green leather jacket. She is a true testament that good style transcends all ages. And just like she is rocking that tulle dress, Kim is really always game for anything.”

“Holly’s photo is more about the photo than the outfit alone. Her pink hair and the empty, freshly green football field are a perfect combination. It makes us think of Grimes and most importantly represents everything that fashion is supposed to be: fun.”

“Color is a very individual thing, but nobody does it as well as Maya. I love the proportions of her body. She is very fit and makes this jumpsuit look amazing!”

“The acid-wash denim is just one of the things that makes this outfit stand apart from the crowd. Sheena gives vintage a run for its money. Her style is so eclectic and unique that her personal touch really comes through everything she wears.”

“Amber’s outfit is one of my favorites. It’s busy and colorful and all about spring. I love matching patterns. Lately it’s all been about sets and matching your tops and bottoms for a strong, structured look. It’s not only easy but also pleasing to the eye.”

See more of Tyler and Ania’s work on their site and follow Ania’s blog for some killer outfit inspiration.

What’s Up, Olivia: Otter Obsession

Our Director of Creative Projects and Pop-In Shop Curator Olivia Kim offers up daily inspiration, favorite products and things she’s super in love with right now.

“Otters are one of my most favorite creatures. They hold hands when they are sleeping so that they don’t float away and they use rocks to open up lobsters. Geniuses and adorable. Best combination of brains and looks!”

Why Sunglasses Make You Sexier: Because, Science

We all know the moment after slipping on a great pair of sunnies and looking in the mirror—that feeling of being instantly more cool, fabulous and mysterious. Turns out, it’s not just in our heads; it’s science fact. At least according to senior art and design lecturer, Vanessa Brown from Nottingham Trent University.

Brown gave the Science of Us a glimpse into the research for her upcoming book, Cool Shades: The History and Meaning of Sunglasses. The gist? 1. Sunglasses make your face appear symmetrical, which is synonymous with perceived beauty. 2. They hide your eyes—no peaking through the windows to your soul. 3. The glamour of Audrey Hepburn and edginess of James Dean. Enough said.

Excuse us, we’re off to get sexy.

Star-Spangled Style: What to Wear This 4th of July

Time to break out your reds, whites and blues! It’s almost the 4th of July—a day when anyone can pull off a patriotic combo of primary colors—and we’ve got inspiration for what to wear this Independence Day. These outfits will have you looking ravishing under the rockets’ red glare no matter where your celebrations take you.

Ted Baker London Cover-Up | kate spade new york flip-flop | Wildfox Sunglasses | ViX Swimwear Bikini

Partying Poolside: Nothing says “summer is here” quite like a bikini. Pledge allegiance with your poolside attire in a chic two-piece from ViX Swimwear paired with kate spade flip-flops. Clear, oversized circle sunnies give the look a mod and stylish twist. When things start to get breezy at twilight’s last gleaming, throw on a cover-up—like this graphic number from Ted Baker.

Steve Madden Wedges | Collection XIIX Sun Hat | Jessica Simpson Seersucker Dress | Wildfox Sunglasses

Rooftop BBQ: Be the belle of the barbecue in this ladylike Jessica Simpson seersucker dress. Sky-high wedges are proper for a patio and give the knee-length skirt a little lift. Accessorize with a wide-brimmed hat and some dramatic cat-eye shades, and all eyes will be on you, not that store-bought potato salad you brought.

Outlook Eyewear Sunglasses | Eliza J Maxi Dress | Steven by Steve Madden Straw Tote | BELLA VITA Wedge Espadrille

Picnic in the Park: A stunning maxi will keep you comfortable and stylish as you watch fireworks under spacious skies. The bold scarf print is eye-catching without being over the top, and these peep-toe espadrilles are park perfect. Retro, oversized sunnies will protect your peepers as you wait for the sun to set. Just throw all your picnic essentials into a fun and functional oversized tote and hit the greenbelt.

Bobeau Maxi Skirt | Topshop Bandeau | Icon Eyewear Sunglasses | DV by Dolce Vita Sandal

Bonfire at the Beach: With stars (and stripes) in your eyes, this beach look is festive and foolproof. A flash of red on your feet is a fun way to bring in some color, and the ankle straps will keep these sandals from slipping off in the sand. A summer staple for any occasion, the billowing maxi skirt pulls the look together for a polished shoreside ensemble.

Listen Up! Sondre Lerche

Last Saturday marked the solstice (the longest day of the year), kids are getting out of school in droves and we’re pretty sure we heard an ice cream truck the other day. It’s official: summer’s here.

In Listen Up! land, that means it’s time to pick the perfect summer jam. Something that works for everything, from chill barbecues to late-night parties to weekend road trips and more. And perhaps we’re playing our hand a little soon, but we think this new single, “Bad Law”, from Norwegian singer-songwriter Sondre Lerche hits all the marks.

The super catchy, highly danceable track is the first single of Lerche’s new album, Please, and we can definitely see it working its way into many a summer mix—although we would advise you to not party quite as hard as Sondre does in the video… turn down for what, indeed.

The full album drops September 23, and Lerche will launch a U.S. tour to support it around the same time. And if you need a little more musical fodder in the meantime, check out these sweet road trip playlists compiled by indie record stores across the country.

It was so refreshing to see such a modern, feminine look at a music fest. This lovely dress is not only the perfect fit and cut for Lauren, but also the color is to die for! Neutral ankle booties and oversize tortoise sunnies are a great complement to this minimalist, chic ensemble. Thanks for the inspiration, Lauren!

RtA Is Ready to Shock and Awe

This week, we welcomed RtA to via C. The brainchild of design duo Eli Azran and David Rimokh, RtA (Road to Awe) is an LA-based brand that has already caught the attention of industry notables and celebs like Kristen Stewart—who knows a thing or two about style. Over the course of a year, what started as a collection of bottoms has grown to include modern tops and jackets with an urban edge.

“For RtA, the pair eschewed special washes and trendy prints in favor of classic designs that won’t go out of style, from a distressed boyfriend set (our personal pick) to standard indigo skinnies.” —Harper’s Bazaar

“I’m loving the mixed-media denim and leather pieces that have a menswear type of vibe but still stay sleek and feminine to the shape.” —Glamour

“The designers have created cool jeans and leather pants with a rock’n’roll vibe that are so desirable, we have a feeling many a style star will be wearing the covetable duds come fashion week.” —Who What Wear

Listen Up! Sturgill Simpson

We love a good cover song. Hearing an artist’s take on something you already know (and possibly love) is always interesting, especially when the original tune gets turned on its head.

So we were super-excited to check out country singer Sturgill Simpson’s cover of “The Promise” by When In Rome. The song is one of those ’80s one-hit wonders, a synth-driven dance track that put the band on the charts in the latter part of the decade.

In Simpson’s hands, though, it’s transformed into a bittersweet honky-tonk ballad that’s incredibly beautiful, quite moving and completely different from the original.

Simpson’s latest record, Metamodern Sounds in Country Music, is out now, and you can catch him on tour this summer.
